After 42+ years working in Media Services in the St. Paul Library, Ann Piotrowski is retiring. We wish Ann well.

Welcome to the library

New students, welcome to St. Kate's. Returning students, we're so glad you're back. We hope to see you all in the library.

You can find a lot of great things in the library: study space, computers, books, magazines, newspapers, journals, group study space (you can even reserve some rooms online), and much more.

And a really important thing you can find in the library: librarians. When you need to do research for a paper and aren't sure where to begin, ask us. When you have been researching but you need more and are struggling, ask us. We are the ones who know how to help you find what you need, so don't struggle. Ask for help. We love working with students.

American Journal of Nursing Books of the Year

Each January, AJN selects the nursing books of the year in 18 categories, ranging from Adult Primary Care to Public Interest and Creative Works.

The St. Catherine Libraries have them all! Come check them out!

Found in the Archives: Library Hours

There was a time when the St. Kate's Library wasn't open every day of the week. Until the late 1960s it was closed on Sundays. Students began asking for extended hours, however. The minutes of the Student-Faculty Committee from November 18, 1964 include this item:

"[There was a suggestion] that the library be open on Sundays and the Friday and Saturday of exam week. It was mentioned that the librarians work very long hours all week and are entitled to have Sunday free."

Demand for Sunday hours continued unsuccessfully until the 1966-67 academic year. That year, Head Librarian Sister Marie Inez mentioned in her annual report "the happy resolution of opening the library on Sundays with the cooperation of students and faculty."

That cooperation was the plan of Resident Student Council President Jan English and Day Student Council President Judy Tingerthall. They led an S.O.S. (Students Out to Study) effort to recruit faculty members to staff the library for 3 hours on Sunday afternoons, using sign-up sheets like the one pictured here. It shows the signatures of 25 faculty members willing to sit at the library desk from 1:30-4:30.

This sign-up sheet is in the Archives and Special Collections as part of the records of the College Association, the student governing board. Unfortunately, the Archives does not seem to have the "list of duties" Sr. Marie Inez left for the faculty members who sat at the desk.

Welcome to St. Kate's!

Hello, new students, and welcome to St. Kate's!

The libraries on the St. Paul and Minneapolis campuses have a lot to offer you. Need to find scholarly articles? Use the libraries. Need to get books on your topic? That's us, too. Need to use a computer? We have those. Need a group study space? We've got those, too.

Need help researching your topic? Ask a librarian! We're here to help you; you're not interrupting us. Come talk to us. Ask us questions. Don't struggle with your research. We librarians can help you in-person, via email, chat, appointments, and even by text. We are the research gurus, so ask us for help.

And on the St. Paul campus, we created a self-guided QR Code library tour, so if you want to learn more about our services, come into the library with a smart phone and take the tour, any time you want. Just look for this whiteboard as you enter the library:

And while you're at the St. Paul campus library, we also made a book display just for you - Keep Calm and Survive College. It's full of books about college life, recipes for college students, and more, so look for this display:

Monday, August 4, LibGuides service disruption

On Monday, August 4 we will be upgrading our LibGuides, the service we use to create guides to help you with certain subject areas, classes, and topics.

Because of this upgrade, while guides are migrated they will be unavailable. If you click on a guide and are redirected to a website for Springshare (the company that makes LibGuides) this is not in error. It means that guide hasn't been moved over quite yet and is in process.

All guides should be working by the end of the day.

In the meantime, if you need help with anything, don't hesitate to ask a librarian.

Rolling whiteboards all around the library!

Whiteboards are great ways for you to do things like:

• Get your thoughts out;
• Collaborate with other students on projects;
• Brainstorm topics; and
• Do some mindmapping.

At your disposal, we now have many rolling whiteboards on wheels all around the library. Just check out a box of markers from the Circ Desk and away you go!

But whiteboards can also be fun, which is why we bought some of these:

The Question of the Week this week asks you to tell us your favorite song of the summer. After you give us your favorite tunes we'll make a Spotify playlist, so you better get in here soon to give us your suggestions.

Make use of the whiteboards. We bought them for YOU to use, so get some work done...or have a little bit of fun.

The Library Website in the New Year

Watch for a revamped website coming at the end of January 2014.

Summertime...and the libraries are open

It's summer in Minnesota! And yet, the Libraries are still open to serve all your research/study/media/archives needs.

The St. Paul Library is open:
Monday-Friday 8am-10pm
Saturday 8am-5pm
Sunday 10am-5pm

The Minneapolis Campus Library is open:
Monday-Thursday 8am-8pm (*till 4pm 5/30 & 31)
Friday 8am-6pm
Closed Saturdays and Sundays

It's that time of year again....The Libraries can help! Find:

• Study space!
  Both campuses have ample study space, designated group study rooms, and out-of-the-way nooks and crannies.
• Quiet (sort of)
  The lower level of the St. Paul library is a great place to find a quiet spot. If you need to write a paper on the computers, bring your earbuds to block out the sound of frantic typing.
• Research help
  The libraries are here to help you with that (ehem) last minute research. Ask them about finding good sources, articles, and citing (they don't mind).
• Online services 24/7
  Access the online databases, e-books, and even get reference services.

Movies @ the Library

Who says summer in the library has to be boring? The St. Paul Campus Library has a number of fun (i.e. non-academic) films available to check out. Many are 2-hour limits, so stop by and watch a movie here on your own laptop, on one of our computers, or on one of the TVs at a media viewing station. Great way to kill a couple hours on campus between sessions (or take a break from studying).

Web of Science provides access to the world’s leading citation databases, with authoritative, multidisciplinary coverage from more than 12,000 of the highest impact research journals in the world, including Open Access journals. You’ll find current and retrospective coverage across 526 different subject areas in the sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities (with backfiles to 2007).
