Welcome to the library

New students, welcome to St. Kate's. Returning students, we're so glad you're back. We hope to see you all in the library.

You can find a lot of great things in the library: study space, computers, books, magazines, newspapers, journals, group study space (you can even reserve some rooms online), and much more.

And a really important thing you can find in the library: librarians. When you need to do research for a paper and aren't sure where to begin, ask us. When you have been researching but you need more and are struggling, ask us. We are the ones who know how to help you find what you need, so don't struggle. Ask for help. We love working with students.

Text & chat with us

You can now text & chat with the St. Kate's librarians!

Don't want to leave your room and visit us at the reference desk? No problem. Have a quick question on how to cite something? Easy peasy. Just text us or chat with us and we can help you.

Rolling whiteboards all around the library!

Whiteboards are great ways for you to do things like:

• Get your thoughts out;
• Collaborate with other students on projects;
• Brainstorm topics; and
• Do some mindmapping.

At your disposal, we now have many rolling whiteboards on wheels all around the library. Just check out a box of markers from the Circ Desk and away you go!

But whiteboards can also be fun, which is why we bought some of these:

The Question of the Week this week asks you to tell us your favorite song of the summer. After you give us your favorite tunes we'll make a Spotify playlist, so you better get in here soon to give us your suggestions.

Make use of the whiteboards. We bought them for YOU to use, so get some work done...or have a little bit of fun.

Back to School for Students!

Wednesday, September 4th is the first day of classes for the 2013-2014 school year. As you begin your journey this semester, the library has a few tools to help you along the way:

• Make an appointment to meet with a librarian and get help with research, citing, and more
• Find help guides for citing (APA, MLA, etc.)
• Check on your library account (books out, overdues, etc)
• Peruse individual research guides for your major or course
• Study or hang out in the library--either at the St. Paul Campus or the Minneapolis Campus
• Stay in touch with us on Facebook or Twitter

September is Library Card Sign-up Month

September is Library Card Sign-up Month! Luckily, at St. Kate's your University ID card doubles as a library card. The long, 14-digit number on the back of the card is your library barcode. You can use this number to access paid-subscription databases and research sources from off-campus. You can also find your barcode on KateWay under Campus Resources.

Did you know?

Residents of Minnesota who have a library card, can get that card activated at any library in the state. That's right: if you're from Wilmar and you have a library card through the Pioneer Library System, you can bring it down to the St. Paul Public Library and check out books!

Films on Demand

Looking for the perfect video clip to show for class or include in a PowerPoint presentation? Try Films on Demand, the largest educational video library collection in the world. This streaming video archive currently features more than 6,400 educational video titles and 72,000 segments. From the humanities to the sciences, from health and medicine to political science. Access this resource on or off campus.

New! Reference Universe: Discover What's Inside Reference Books

Reference Universe is a discovery service for information contained in both print and electronic reference books owned by the St. Kate's libraries. Quickly search the tables of contents and indexes of thousands of reference books. Reference Universe directs you to the right book, right volume—and even the right page! 

Thanksgiving Break

The libraries will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday from 6 pm Wed., Nov. 24  through Sun., Nov. 28. There will be no reference services during this time, but online access to the library's website, databases, and electronic resources will be available all weekend. Normal hours resume Monday, Nov. 29.

Printing Issues - St. Paul Campus Library Computers

Working on the campus computers? Bring a flash drive! The public computers in the St. Paul Library are experiencing some occasional technical difficulties involving printing and other issues.

Also, please remember that you are not able to retrieve anything saved on public computers. Each student has a drive (the U drive) on the University's server. Save to your U drive or to a portable flash drive.

These issues do not affect off-campus access or any other library services.

Are you working on the Social Work Skills Worksheet #2 for library skills? Help is no further than your nearest librarian. Or you can download this handy guide that walks you through the assignment. Please note, you will need to come to the library to use the Encyclopedia of Social Work, but this will give you a head start.
