Off-campus access over Thanksgiving

As announced in the Daily Update, KateWay will be down for maintenance over Thanksgiving weekend (Thursday, November 24 through Sunday, November 27th). Off-campus access to library databases will be available through the library's website. Just use Option 2 as directed when you see our "Login to library databases" page. Option 2 only requires your last name and library barcode.

Off-campus access via your KateWay login (using Option 1 on our login page) will resume by Monday, November 28th.

We hope you manage to get some rest and relaxation in over the holiday weekend!

ILLiad registration issues resolved

ILLiad, our interlibrary loan system, underwent some maintenance on November 9th. We are glad to report that all remaining issues have been resolved. If you tried to register for an ILLiad account earlier and ran into difficulty, please try again.

If you haven't accessed ILLiad lately, you'll notice that, instead of separate login buttons for St. Paul and Minneapolis, there is now a single login button for both campuses. The webpages you see while accessing ILLiad may look a little different. These changes are part of our preparation for making WorldCat Local, a new search and discovery system for library resources, available at St. Kate's.

The technical issue we had last week with our H.W. Wilson databases (Library Literature and Information Science Full Text, Art Full Text, and Readers Guide Retrospective) has been resolved. Everything should be back to normal.

By the way these databases are scheduled to move to the EBSCOhost platform by the end of 2011, since EBSCO and H.W. Wilson have merged.

New look for PsycINFO

The next time you're searching PsycINFO for psychology articles, you'll notice that the database has an all new look. PsycINFO is moving to a new database platform called ProQuest. The old CSA Illumina platform, so familiar to many of us, is being discontinued. The search options available in ProQuest will be similar, and the database content is the same, but the screens will look different. If you need help using the new PsycINFO, try the online help or contact the Reference Desk.

Paul, Babe, and library books

Paul Bunyan, the larger-than-life lumberjack, is the subject of many tall tales. You may remember Paul's stories from your childhood. Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox were given credit for forming rivers, lakes, and mountains all over the northwest and in Minnesota.

Check out the nearly-life-sized image of Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox now on display at the St. Paul campus Library. Included in the display are books about Paul for both children and adults.

Student Workers and Staff at the Library: Philanthropists

Student workers at the St. Paul campus Circulation Desk, under the direction of staff members Belinda Lawrence and Jenny Peters, created the winning video for St. Catherine University's Tobacco Free promotion. With their $250 in prize money, the group decided to donate goods to the Unidad Académica Campesina - Carmen Pampa in Bolivia. Carmen Pampa serves impoverished rural people through education and community service.The students sent stethoscopes and blood pressure cuffs which will be used by the community.

Library Science Program Receives Accreditation

President Andrea Lee announced the good news that St. Catherine University's Masters in Library and Information Science program has received accreditation from the American Library Association (ALA). This makes St. Kate's the only ALA accredited library science program in the state and one of only 57 nationwide. Congratulations!

Remembering Professor Emeritus Don Jones

It is with deep regrets that we announce the December 17, 2010, death of Donald Bemis Jones, Associate Professor Emeritus of the College of St. Catherine Library. Don was the Performing Arts Librarian for twenty five years at the college (now University), retiring in 1994. He came to the College of St. Catherine in 1969 after receiving his MA in Library Science from the University of Minnesota. He earned both BA and Master’s degrees in Music in the 1950’s and was active during his career in the Minnesota Library Association, the Music Library Association’s Midwest Chapter, and the Minnesota Music Librarian’s Society.

He was close to many members of the library and the Music Department, as well as the CLIC library consortium. Many of his former colleagues remember his kindness, his lively sense of humor, and his love of music. He was a friend to all who knew him, and we are saddened by his loss.

RefWorks not exporting from FirstSearch

Exporting references from FirstSearch database into RefWorks has recently been discontinued by OCLC, distributors of FirstSearch. No reason is known why OCLC chooses not to support RefWorks (or other citation management systems), but hopefully this service will be restored in the near future.

Working on the campus computers? Bring a flash drive! The public computers in the St. Paul Library are experiencing some occasional technical difficulties involving printing and other issues.

Also, please remember that you are not able to retrieve anything saved on public computers. Each student has a drive (the U drive) on the University's server. Save to your U drive or to a portable flash drive.

These issues do not affect off-campus access or any other library services.

RefWorks 2.0 now available

RefWorks users now have the option of using the newer 2.0 interface, featuring improved navigation and a newer, nifty look.

Just log into your new RefWorks account as usual, then click on the link in the upper right corner for "Refworks 2.0." You will have access to all the citations in your Refworks database. From Refworks 2.0, you can switch back to the traditional interface by clicking "Refworks Classic" in the upper right corner. Make sure you save any new work before switching between the two interfaces.

Our plan is to switch to 2.0 as the default in Fall 2010, so you may want to begin to get used to it now. Guides will be available by the end of the summer. Questions? Call/email/IM a librarian.

A haiku is a short poem of 17 syllables that expresses a single thought in a structure of three lines. All entries due by April 10, 2010. The best poems will appear on the Library's website and one lucky winner will receive a prize (tba).

Change Your KateWay Timeout

On the new KateWay, everyone's timeout period was set to the default of 15 minutes. This creates problems if you use KateWay to get to the Library's web site and databases. The system does not consider time spent on the Library, databases, or CLICnet web pages as KateWay activity, and will try to end your session after 15 minutes. As a result you can be kicked out of the search you are in, losing all your results.

To help prevent this, make your session timeout period longer. Click the Change Timeout link at the top left of KateWay, next to your name, to change the value. You can increase it up to 60 minutes.

Library Receives Invitation to CRRA

The St. Catherine University Library has been honored with an invitation to join the Catholic Research Resources Alliance (CRRA), a collaborative alliance of eight Catholic Universities (including Notre Dame, Marquette, Boston, and Georgetown). The CRRA’s mission is to create access to Catholic research resources, establish the portal and best practices for adding materials, and create a freely available resource. The recently digitized Ade Bethune Collection has been instrumental in leading to this invitation.

Welcome new students in the SCU/UST Master of Social Work program! We hope you will find the St. Kate's Library a welcoming place to study and research. Let us know how we can help.

All new students to the MSW program should have received or will soon receive an email from the program office. This email contains important information pertaining to your access to the St. Kate's computer network. Follow the direction provided regarding your initial username and password, creating a security question, and resetting your primary password.

Similar to your UST computer account, this username and password should be used to log into campus computers, for off-campus access to Library resources (including journals and interlibrary loan), and anytime you are prompted to log in at St. Kate's.

Friends of the Libraries present Cathy Wurzer

Take a road trip with featured speaker, Cathy Wurzer, author of Tales of the Road: Highway 61, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 1 in Coeur de Catherine, Rauenhorst Ballroom. This is the annual fundraising event of the Friends of the Libraries.

Wurzer thrives on politics and horses. She gets excited at the thought of the Legislature going in to session every January. Wurzer also is Minnesota Public Radio's (MPR) Morning Edition host and Twin Cities Public Television's (tpt) Almanac co-host. She resides in Minneapolis.

The Libraries have received comments that it's difficult to figure out how to renew books in the new CLICnet. We agree, the process is not very obvious. To renew books, check your holds, or access other functions of your account, follow these steps:

Click on the Login link at the very top right of the screen
Enter your name and barcode number. (Your barcode is the 14-digit number on the back of your St. Kate's ID card)
It will look like nothing has happened, but the very top of the screen will now say "Welcome, Your Name"
Click on the My Account link at the top right of the screen -- you will now be in the My Account page in CLICnet Classic
From here you can renew your books, check your holds, etc.

That Time of Year

Yes, it's back to school time. You can tell by the brisk sales of sweaters and jeans (despite temps still in the 70s and 80s) and by the rows and rows of Crayola at Target. For those of us in higher education (whether a freshman, a grad student, or a professor), back to school means more than just new shoes. It also means buying books, remembering your username and password, and making sure your alarm clock will get you up for your 8 a.m. class.

Fall Book Club: A Graphic Novel

Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood by Marjane Satrapi is a memoir in graphic novel format (illustrated like a comic book). Through words and pictures, Satrapi invites us to experience her life as a child during the revolution in Iran in the 1980s. With the political unrest in Iran right now, this book will give readers a history lesson with a human touch.

Nancy Pearl (author of Book Lust) likens Persepolis to The Kite Runner and The Namesake for its portrayal of international family life and the challenges faced by those from conflicted regions.

The book, along with its sequel Persepolis 2, was made into an animated film in 2007. The film is available for viewing at the Library ( St. Paul Media Desk PN1995.9.B55 P477 2008).

Citation Styles: MLA

MLA or Modern Language Association is the citation style used most frequently in the arts and languages. The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers is the text used to format papers, create bibliographies, and document in-text citations. MLA has just come out with a new edition. Look for The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers Seventh Edition!

Change can be hard and we're here to help you through. Beginning this summer we will be focusing our efforts on learning the new edition and will keep you informed of the changes in style and format.

A few highlights of changes in the 7th Edition:

The medium of publication (DVD, website, etc) is now required for all sources, including print
Web publications no longer require the URL in the works cited list
Volume and issue will be required
Italics will be used in place of underline

Support your local library...school!

Shock and dismay best describes the St. Kate's community reaction in January upon hearing the decision for continuing the College of St. Catherine's application for accreditation by the American Library Association Committee on Accreditation. The continuance means that current students will not be able to graduate with an accredited MLIS graduate degree until the ALA through the COA gives approval to the program. A Petition for Accreditation wiki was started by a graduate of the program. A Facebook group is also going strong.

On April 17th, St. Kate's President Andrea Lee, IHM leads a team from the library school to meet with the ALA's Committee on Accreditation. Both campus libraries have employed library students over the years and have been impressed with the caliber of the students.

Book Club - February 2009

The St. Kate's Book Club met in early February to discuss Sue Monk Kidd's The Secret Life of Bees. Although attendance was small, the students, faculty, and staff present were able to engage in a lively discussion about this fascinating saga of mothers and daughters, belonging, and race relations.
If you've read the book but were unable to attend the book club meeting, consider some of these questions that were used for discussion:

Who is the "queen bee" in this story?
How do the women in this story (the "calendar sisters," the Daughters of Mary, Rosaleen, etc.) transform Lily?
How does May's life and death affect the characters?
How would you describe Lily and Zach's relationship? What do you foresee for them?

Graduate Student Library User Survey

Last spring, library staff conducted a survey of graduate students’ library usage and satisfaction with resources and services. Survey responses reflect the changes that have occurred in students’ information needs and behaviors since the last survey was done in 2000.

A total of 310 completed surveys were received from students in all nine graduate programs. The survey revealed that more than half of the respondents conduct their research away from the CSC Libraries. 59.1% of the respondents do their research at home, and only 28.9% use the CSC Libraries as their primary research site. This finding has significant implications for the delivery and access of library services.

While print sources are still important to graduate students, access to digital content is a big need and the top library priority for survey respondents. The overwhelming majority of students (90.4%) want the Libraries to provide more online full-text journal articles, with almost half (43%) requesting more library databases. Coming in at a distant third is more library computers (28.3%). Comments from respondents echoed the need for more full-text articles.

Library staff helpfulness and knowledge and interlibrary loan services were all given the highest ratings by survey respondents, and written comments confirm that the libraries’ greatest strength is its staff.

Survey responses affirmed the Library’s prioritizing of electronic resources, specifically library databases. Librarians are also providing more training workshops and individual consultations for graduate students and are engaged in a significant redesign of the library website to improve service to remote access users.

The staff is appreciative of the students who contributed their ideas and voiced their concerns, and we will continue to use the survey data as guidance in addressing graduate students’ information needs.

Greener Printing

Rather than creating a paperless era, increased computer use has resulted in an explosion in printing. Remember that more printing translates to higher consumption of paper and toner ( and increased wear and tear on printers) -- all of which cost money and resources.

As students, you need to print research articles and papers to hand in. When job hunting or submitting to committees, you might need paper copies of resumes or reports. There are many reasons for keeping hard copies of electronic data -- but remember that there are many choices you can make when printing that will use fewer pages.

A New "GLO" in the Library

The St. Paul campus library now has a new GLO: the Green Library Organization. This group, consisting of staff members Emily Asch, Barbara Klug, Belinda Lawrence, Jim Newsome, Kathi Rickert, and Martha Vest, is dedicated to finding ways to lower the library’s energy consumption and its uses of non-renewable resources.

The group was formed after Rickert and Newsome attended a session on energy saving at the 2008 Midwest Library Technology Conference. The St. Kate’s Library tends to use lots of paper in copiers, printers, and in print media such as journals and books.

In recent years, print consumption has reduced somewhat as library collections migrate from print to electronic formats. New Computing Services printing policies capping free printing for each user have also helped reduce paper use in the Library and across campus. The group hopes to investigate better ways to reduce waste from abandoned print jobs to old handouts and more.

GLO has begun an energy audit, so we can determine what energy resources the library is currently consuming. The goal will then be to analyze how best to reduce consumption, whether it be by finding more energy efficient lighting or heating patterns, other earth-friendly options.

GLO has just launched, but it should be a key player on campus as it networks with new student groups who have also formed to create a more sustainable campus environment. GLO will also seek ways to build our library book collections in the area of environmental sciences and also hopes to create an annual display for Earth Day in an effort to educate users to be better stewards of the planet.

Whatever happens, it will no longer be business as usual for wasteful consumption. GLO appreciates any comments or suggestions, and readers may contact any of the members listed above.

Please Pass the Pie

As part of the faculty and staff opening workshop in August, President Andrea Lee presented The Art of Possibility, a video based on Rosamund and Ben Zander’s book of the same title. Its subtitle is Transforming Professional and Personal Life, and the Zanders present practices that are truly transformational. My personal favorite is Rule Number 6.

“Two prime ministers are sitting in a room discussing affairs of state. Suddenly a man bursts in, apoplectic with fury, shouting and stamping and banging his fist on the desk. The resident prime minister admonishes him: “Peter,” he says, “kindly remember Rule Number 6,” whereupon Peter is instantly restored to complete calm, apologizes, and withdraws. The politicians return to their conversation, only to be interrupted yet again twenty minutes later by an hysterical woman gesticulating wildly, her hair flying. Again the intruder is greeted with the words: “Marie, please remember Rule Number 6.” Complete calm descends once more, and she too withdraws with a bow and an apology. When the scene is repeated for a third time, the visiting prime minister addresses his colleague: “My dear friend, I’ve seen many things in my life, but never anything as remarkable as this. Would you be willing to share with me the secret of Rule Number 6?” “Very simple,” replies the resident prime minister. “Rule Number 6 is ‘Don’t take yourself so damn seriously.’” “Ah,” says his visitor, “that is a fine rule.” After a moment of pondering, he inquires, “And what, may I ask, are the other rules?” “There aren’t any.”

This simple rule, along with another suggesting that we throw ourselves into life, making a difference, contributing freely and allowing others the opportunity to contribute what they have to offer, was the inspiration for a pie contest.

Before our full staff library meeting in November, all staff received a recipe card in their campus mailbox with minimal information regarding the contest. The only rule? Number 6. Despite lower than expected turnout due to scheduling conflicts, the November 21st meeting included a total of eight pies (accompanied the 16 library folks able to attend the meeting). After business, the final agenda item was the pie tasting and “judging.” Karen Harwood, former head of Technical Services, made a guest appearance to help with the event, and a fine time was had by all. Prizes were awarded based on appearance and delectability. Because the pies did appear, and all eight were delectable, all participants received a prize. The very best prizes, of course, were those served on plates to everyone who could stay and enjoy a pie breakfast.

Thanks to everyone who did not take themselves too seriously, contributed freely, and made the event possible. Who knows? One of our all staff library meetings next year could just Take the Cake!
